I have just recently found your cite and you do a good job explaining things. One question -- Do you put oil on a steel diamond stone? Some of the folks around here say that is a no no. If so, why.

This may be a long reply because there is a lot to this , but. . here I go. . . . Yes I use Norton honing oil, which is just really refined mineral oil. In fact it's food grade mineral oil and is thinner than what you find in the pharmacy or grocery stores. I've helped many people unclog their diamond stones by having them switch to oil. In my mind and more importantly experience, there is no difference between a natural stone and a diamond stone, the oil works exactly the same. water doesn't float the particles away and it just makes the metal bits left on the stone rust and clog it. Paul Sellers uses some sort of glass cleaner, which is OK, but still not as good as honing oil. I've been using diamond and natural stones at work and home for so long, tried all the options and have stuck with the oil for several years now. Also , because I use my diamond and oil stones together, using oil makes the most sense. The manufacturers tell people not to use oil because what is oil??? depends Motor oil, 3in1, etc. . to many options so they don't recommend, also you have to know these diamond plate makers have been mostly making diamond plates for machinist for decades and in the machines the oil will get thick quick and make a mess. . . but we use our hands and it's a totally different application. so in this case oil works. Hope that makes some sense and I didn't ramble. should do a video on this I get asked about it all the time. . . stay tuned.
