When I think of the most Iconic first woodworking project, the first thing that pops into my mind is a birdhouse.
To begin you need to figure out what kind of birdhouse you want to build based on the birds in your local area. I found a handy website that provides not only the plans for building birdhouses, but where and how to hang them. Here is that site: 50BIRDS They have feeders and all sorts of other projects to build too. And, you may find that one style house works for several birds in your area.
In our area we happen to have many birds that just don't like living in an actual box. Which, I don't blame them because its over 100 degrees during the summer, I wouldn't want to be in a wood box either without air conditioning.
These are the plans we chose from the site. This platform is for Robins, Phoebes, Blue Jays, and a couple other birds. The plans are easy to follow and make the process very simple.
Your Homework Must Be Done Before The Birdhouse Build Can Begin
Building any project with small children requires you to do a little bit of homework the day, or night, before they get involved. If the child can do some, or all of this work themselves, great, just make sure things are prepared for a successful build. The amount of work you do really depends on the skill level of the child. In this case, I had to cut out all the parts, trim and fit them together with a block plane, and I actually predrilled and assembled the house myself. All this work assures a smooth project build the following day. The less involved you are in the build the better, let them OWN the project.
In general this project went great. This wasn't a very advanced project, we didn't use more than a couple tools, but we got in the shop, had some fun, and made something.
I highly recommend building a birdhouse with your little ones, or any other children in your vicinity. Its a fun easy project that can be adapted to any skill level.
Next project will be a tool chest, which is her idea, but I have to figure out how its going to get done. Stay tuned.........
